We understand that casting is an exciting–and sometimes stressful–part of the performance process, and we make every decision with care. As we strive to honor the quality and integrity of this beloved production, we are also guided by the following values:

Opportunity: We intentionally welcome and cast dancers from schools across the Twin Cities area. We believe in the value of offering young dancers the opportunity to step outside their home studios, work alongside new peers and coaches, and share in a tradition that now belongs to our broader community. Your enthusiasm has brought wonderful new energy to this 60+-year-old Nutcracker.

Individual Growth: Every dancer’s path through Nutcracker roles will be different. Our rehearsal process is rigorous, and we will challenge dancers to grow and develop their technique, artistry, and professionalism. Our goal is that participating dancers feel empowered, accomplished, and inspired at the end of the season.

Group Commitment: Every performer is essential to the Nutcracker story and an important part of our community. We want each dancer to understand both the responsibility and the reward of being part of something larger than themselves. We aim to build a cast where dancers support and inspire one another, form friendships across schools, and learn the value of contributing to a shared artistic experience.

We will open opportunities for as many dancers as possible this year; however, we cannot guarantee every dancer who auditions will earn a performing or understudy role. Casting decisions are made thoughtfully by our Artistic Team based on the needs of the production and where we believe each dancer will thrive. If a dancer is not placed this season, we are happy to provide written audition feedback to help identify areas for growth and guide future Nutcracker goals.
